Frame Choices
Designer
The fashion for designer sunglasses changes from season to season. The good news for spectacle
wearers is that our prescription laboratory is able to fit spectacle lenses to a wide range of
the designer sunglasses currently on the market. If purchasing a frame elsewhere for this
purpose, please check suitability with us beforehand to avoid any disappointment.
Ophthalmic Frames
Rather than purchasing a dedicated sunglass frame, any frame that can be used for
clear lenses can also be transformed into prescription sunglasses by inserting tinted
lenses instead. For advice on tint colours to suit various coloured spectacle frames,
please ask your Optician at the time of dispensing.
Types of Tint
Single Colour
The most basic sunglass lenses are single colour tints, where the amount of light that passes
through the lens is reduced consistently across the lens surface by the addition of a coloured
dye. Conventional colours are brown, grey and green, although a wide variety of other colours
are available.
UV400 Block
All sunglasses that we provide are supplied with a treatment that prevents the
transmission of harmful UV rays to the eyes. This protects the eye from damage
that has been linked to the formation of cataracts and macula degeneration.
Graduated
As an alternative to darkening the whole lens with a tint, the lens can be made darker at the top
to provide more protection from overhead bright lights, and then either fade slightly or completely
at the bottom of the lens to make reading and mobility easier.
Bi-colour
Rather than a graduated tint simply fading at the bottom of the lens, it can instead change to a
completely different colour. This can be done to match the lenses that are being replaced in your
current designer glasses, or simply to create a more striking effect.
Polarised
These are the most comfortable sunglass lenses for driving, fishing, sailing
and other situations where reflected light and glare cause problems. A polarised
lens blocks all of the light that is reflected from the surface of the road
or water, enabling you to see the fish that got away more clearly and enhancing
your safety on the road.
Mirror Coating
In addition to changing the colour of the lens by tinting, a mirror-finish can be applied to the
front surface of the lenses. This further reduces the light that passes through to your eyes, and
makes it harder for people to see your eyes behind the lenses.
Silver Shadow Clean Touch Coating
This semi-transparent mirror coating can be applied to a wide range of lenses. It can be used in addition to
tinted lenses to create a look that can be sporty, casual or elegant. When added to non-tinted lenses the coating
plays with the light, giving the wearer a mysterious gaze.
